   It helps measure initial stresses of soil in-situ and determines soil deformation modulus in situ. The tests include sinking a flat stiff probe into soil with the help of standard drilling rigs and static penetration push rods. While the probe sinks down in situ lateral stresses at rest and pore pressure are measured. The measured lateral pressure enables measurement of lateral pressure coefficient at rest and of soil deformation modulus.
  Pore pressure dissipation rate measurement enables evaluation of filtration rate and filtration consolidation time.
 The obtained value of lateral pressure helps determine lateral pressure during soil tests in tri-axial compression and to evaluate lateral pressure coefficient at rest. The coefficient of lateral pressure at rest helps analyze active and passive soil pressures on sheet piling wall and retaining walls. The dilatometer contains in-built sensors for measuring lateral stresses and pore pressure, the generate data fed via cable and interface into computer. The probe vertical displacement is measured with potentiometer sensors.
